Masterclass: The Role of Natural Gas in a World Seeking to Decarbonise and Reduce its Dependence on the Middle East

This masterclass examines the strategic transformation of natural gas within a global energy landscape shaped by the trilemma of security, sustainability and affordability. As advanced and emerging economies seek to decarbonise their energy systems without compromising supply stability, growing structural shortages and volatility in the global diesel market have placed significant pressure on the competitiveness of heavy transport, industry and secondary power generation. In this context, natural gas — both in the form of LNG and compressed natural gas (CNG) — is emerging as an immediate alternative to displace middle distillates at scale, significantly reducing operating costs and polluting emissions.

At the same time, rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the reconfiguration of maritime routes are increasing the urgency to accelerate the diversification of global supply sources.
